Lunch will be served at the hotel’s restaurant and will be followed by the afternoon’s tours.

Cusco, the birthplace of the Inca Empire, is Peru’s principal tourist destination, thanks to its impressive historic, architectural and cultural legacy. The city is known as “the navel of the world”, for having been the political, religious and territorial center of the Tawantisuyo, as the Empire was called.

DECEMBER 27TH - DAY 02 Visit Sacsayhuaman - Andean Musical Lecture

Visit Sacsayhuaman Temple

Sacsayhuaman, a huge Inca temple located on a hilltop above Cusco. The ruins stun their precisely-cut massive stone blocks, which would have been hauled up here from as far as 20 miles away. Many of the stones you’ll see here were fitted together with such finesse that not even a stem of grass or a needle could be slipped into the seamless crevices where they meet. Even the Spanish conquistadors were impressed by the meticulous joinery of the Inca stonemasons.

Andean Musical lecture

Enjoy a private and hands-on music demonstration of traditional Peruvian instruments ranging from pre-Incan to modern day. This exclusive meeting will be held in private at the San Antonio Hotel’s chapel and following the lecture, you will also be able to play any of these special instruments. This is a great hands-on opportunity for all to learn about Peruvian culture and have an opportunity to participate in a creative and fun activity.

Learn how music is an important part of Peruvian culture as Mr. Gustavo Leon demonstrates and plays the different traditional instruments from around Peru, from the coast and Andean mountains to the Peruvian Amazon. With the golden backdrop of the Monasterio chapel, learn about the various string, percussion, and wind instruments Mr. Leon has re-created from ancient designs.

Dinner at Map Cafe restaurant.

DECEMBER 28TH - DAY 03 Visit the Sacred Valley - Camping at Chachabamba

This morning, depending on departure time, you’ll be able to visit the Ollantaytambo fortress, prior to boarding the train that takes you from the Ollantaytambo station to Km. 104 (the beginning of the short Inca Trail), where the base camp is established, where we’ll take our meals.

Ollantaytambo

•Situated at 2,700 m. above sea level, Ollantaytambo was one of the main llaqtas (cities) of the Inca Empire, and served as an urban, military, agricultural and religious center. This was deduced by the diversity of constructions, among which were found food warehouses, security towers and walls, temples, residences, fountains and impressive terrace works for farming.
•Among its buildings and majestic stone works, a highlight is the Temple of the Sun, composed of 17 stacked terraces, crowned at the top level by large, finely carved stone blocks, where you also find the Inca Huatana or Intihuatana, a series of stone structures used for astronomical observation.

Chachabamba

•Located at Km. 104 of the railway to Machu Picchu, Chachabamba will be the point of departure to experience the Inca Trail, which was part of the Qhapaq Ñan, or Inca Empire’s extensive network of roads.
•This beautiful archeological site was rediscovered in 1940. Based on the construction style and stonework, many archeologists agree that this was an important religious center.

DECEMBER 29TH - DAY 04 Inca trail

We recommend an 8.00 AM departure to avoid the arrival of more travelers along the route. For this stretch, we suggest carrying only a daypack with your personal items. You’ll be able to leave the rest of your baggage at the camp to be taken to Cusco.

Short Inca trail-KM 104

•The road network of the Tahuantinsuyo (in Quechua, the Qhapac Ñan) was a system of thoroughfares that covered enormous distances, linking the important cities of the Empire, and which today crosses the countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. This Inca road system was, in fact, an ancestral pre-Inca legacy, which reached its apex during the Inca state. In the Quechua language, Qhapaq Ñan means “road of the King, or road of the powerful”, which designated the entirety of this system of roads that covers over 30,000 kilometers.
•The Inca Road to Machu Picchu had a religious and ceremonial purpose; a pilgrimage that included rituals to honor the sacred mountains, or Apus, along the road.
•This short version of the Inca Road starts at Chachabamba, from where an ascent begins that will take us to visit diverse attractions, such as waterfalls, impressive landscapes and important archeological sites, including Wiñay Wayna, which in Quechua means “Forever Young”. This site features numerous terraces, buildings and ceremonial waterworks.

We’ll take our lunch at Sanctuary Lodge restaurant.

DECEMBER 29TH - DAY 04 Visit Machu Picchu ancient citadel - Return to Cusco

Visit Machu Picchu

•The Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is proof of the mastery of the Incas in terms of architectural, urban and technological development. It is considered the most famous Inca town, and was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World in 2007. It was declared a Cultural Heritage Site of Humanity by UNESCO, as an important religious, political and administrative center of the Inca era.
•Machu Picchu, the quechua term for “old mountain”, is 100 km. northeast of Cusco in the province of Urubamba, and is situated 2,430 m. above sea level, in the midst of impressive mountain cloud forest, in a tropical landscape that is notable for its flora and fauna, and blessed with splendid biological diversity.

Take a private bus which will be ready and waiting very close to the entrance of the citadel. The descent trip will take about 30 minutes to the town of Machu Picchu, followed by a 3-minute walk to the station to board the train.
Upon arrival of your shuttle bus at the bus station, you will be transferred on foot to the train station to await the departure of your train to Ollantaytambo dinner is served on board.
The train ride will take one hour and 45 minutes, and the route by car to Cusco will take an additional 2 hours, depending on the traffic.

DECEMBER 30TH - DAY 05 Visit Cusco Cathedral

Visit Cathedral

•The Cathedral of Cusco is one of the most beautiful and impressive colonial buildings to be found in Cusco. Its construction took place between 1560 and 1664, on land occupied by the Kiswarcancha, the ancient residence of Inca Wiracocha.
•Constructed of enormous stone blocks brought from Sacsayhuaman (an important Inca temple), its architecture combines elements of gothic, baroque and renaissance styles.
•The Cathedral’s structure has the shape of a Latin cross, with a renaissance style façade and interior. Inside, one can find the finest examples of colonial metalwork, as well as a priceless collection of paintings of the Cusqueña school.
•The Cathedral of Cusco still today contains an unmatched collection of silverwork, metalwork and paintings. In addition, it contains splendid renaissance, baroque and neo-classic style altars. It also accommodates the most representative iconic figures of Cusqueña faith, such as the Lord of Tremors, or “Señor de los Temblores”.

What clothes do I have to wear on the trip?

One of the first questions on everyone’s mind when getting ready for a Peru luxury tour is what on earth to pack. Not to mention what may need to be purchased ahead of time. Whatever kind of packer you are, don’t wait until the last minute to pack for your personalized trip to Peru. Auqui offers this useful and helpful packing list to ensure your travel bags are filled with all of the right essentials for your private Peru tour.

First things First

  • Make a list. Don’t rely on memory alone in those final crazy hours before a vacation. A list will help you remember everything you need.
  • It’s recommended to leave all unnecessary valuables and jewelry at home.

Clothing

Clothing should be lightweight, and quick-drying, preferably moisture-wicking, and non-cotton. No matter where you are headed, you need to be prepared. For example, if you plan on spending a few days in Cusco, weather can shift dramatically. During the day, if the sun is shining, temperatures can get uncomfortably hotuncomfortably hot. However, once the sun sets, it’s a whole ‘nother story as things can cool down quite rapidly. That’s why it’s a great idea to dress in layers you can peel off and then replace as the temperatures shift throughout the day.

As for hats, gloves, and scarves, you can wait until you get here for that. Peru is known for its textiles and you can easily pick these mementos of your trip up quite cheaply. They won’t be waterproof, however, so if you’re trekking, bring some appropriate gloves and a rain hat.

Speaking of rain, it’s always wise to have a waterproof jacket with you no matter when you are traveling. Waterproof shoes will come in handy as well. If you’re coming between December and March, they are essential. If you’re trekking during those months, you’ll want to bring waterproof pants (zip-off pants are very useful) as well.

Essential Clothing List

-Long pants (zip-off pants are very useful)

-Shorts, mid-thigh or longer

-Short-sleeved shirts

-Long-sleeved shirts

-Undergarments

-Light and thick socks

-Sweater, jacket, windbreaker

-Sun hat

-Sunglasses

-Bandana (for dust, washing, etc.)

-Swimsuit

Acclimatization

One of the most common afflictions in Andean areas is altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or Soroche. The thin oxygen at high elevations causes rapid breathing, which leads dehydration as more water is lost through exhaling than is gained through inhaling the dry mountain air. Different travelers have different levels of susceptibility to altitude sickness, but most symptoms begin occurring at altitudes around 6,000 ft.

Some of Auqui’s most beautiful destinations sit at dizzyingly high altitudes, including Machu Picchu, Cusco, and Titikaka lake. Not all travelers suffer from altitude sickness, but it is better to be informed rather than allow the possibility deter you from traveling to these spectacular locales.

Rest at least 2 hours in your hotel before embarking on any activities. Elevate your head about 30º with two or three pillows to ease breathing.

Drink at least 4 quarts (4.5 liters) of water every day to avoid dehydration.

Try mate de coca, a tea-like infusion of coca leaves (don’t worry, it’s legal to drink in Peru). Chewing coca leaves is also very effective.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking.

Eat a high-carbohydrate diet during your stay.
