South Valley Program

Cusco South Valley Experience

South of the city of Cusco is the place known as the South Valley.

It is an important place for the development of the Inca empire.

It is the perfect tour for people looking to experience archaeological sites, less crowded landscapes, and beautiful colonial churches from the “Barroco-Andino” stile.

This territory was one of the first inhabited places in the entire Cusco valley. The first inhabitants of the culture known as ‘Marcavalle’ populated this place 1000 years before Christ.

It was one of the most important administrative-cultist centers of the Wari (or Huari) culture, between the 6th and 9th centuries of our era, and represents the planned urban planning wari par excellence. Some specialists maintain that it remained in force until the time of the Incas, although no remains have been found to corroborate this presence.

Day 1 Huaro church

After your first visit, you will continue driving to the next point Huaro Church.

Built at the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th, the impressive mural paintings, cover all the ceilings and walls. These paintings, which were made by Tadeo Escalante, he was a painter from Acomoayo – Cusco, show the end of the human being, that is, the journey through death, the final judgment, glory, and hell, and are defined by the union of Andean symbology.

Mudejar coffered ceiling of the presbytery, made with wooden boxes and its main altarpiece, made of carved wood and gilded with gold leaf, in the Baroque style, built in the 17th century by Martín de Torres.

DAY 1 Andahuaylillas church

It is believed there was already a small chapel in Andahuaylillas, built over an Inca temple, which was used as an Indian Reduction at the end of the XVI century.

The building of the temple, as we know, it began in 1610 through the initiative of the parish priest Juan Perez de Bocanegra.

This majestic artistry is reflected in the coffered ceiling of Mudejar influence.

The mural paintings of Luis de Riaño, of the Cusqueña School of Art, the polychromy of the ceilings, and the triumphal arch that divides the presbytery and the main nave.
