ABOUT THE DESTINATIONS TO VISIT

SALT MINES OF MARAS

The salt mines of Maras offer a new look at the amazing ingenuity and skill of the Incas. The first shallow salt ponds in Maras were probably built by the Wari civilization between 500 and 1100 AD.

Built along the steep slope of Qoripujio Mountain, most of these pools were no more than 15 square feet (5 square meters) and 30 centimeters deep (0.98 ft).  Each of the more than 3,000 pools is various shades of white or brown. You can buy the local salt here too, great for cooking or medicinal salt baths.

  • Visiting time: 1 hour

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF OLLANTAYTAMBO

Ollantaytambo was a strategic military, religious and agricultural center that still dazzles with its stone-worked platforms and its imposing buildings over four meters high. Manco Inca faced the Spanish troops of Hernando Pizarro and was victorious at this very site.

The fortress was built with huge rocks brought from a quarry six kilometers – 3.73 miles away near the Urubamba River. To transport these stones, the Incas had to divert the entire water channel around them, in a masterful work of engineering and wisdom.

  • Visiting time: 1 hour

MORAY ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX

The Archaeological Complex of Moray, where circular platforms or “muyus” sink into the earth creating different microclimates. In what seems to have been an Inca center of experimentation for agriculture, the Incas domesticated plants to get them used to colder climates or warmer climates.

SUGGESTIONS

MACHU PICCHU FULL DAY

Visiting Machu Picchu is a “mandatory” stop on any visit to Cusco. You can visit on a busy schedule to make the most of your time, or take your time, with a more leisurely visit resting for one night in the town of Aguas Calientes,

This beautiful Inca citadel is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Located high up on a mountain range at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level, it is surrounded by spectacular views and surprisingly well-preserved archaeological remains.

INCA TRAIL - KM104 and MACHU PICCHU FULL DAY

The Inca Trail is an intricate road system of “paved” roads that exceeded 30,000 kilometers (18,641 miles). They unified the entire Inca empire (Tawantinsuyo) from the capital Cusco. The trails went all the way north from Colombia, passing through Ecuador, touring Peru, and then south continuing with Bolivia, and further in Chile and Argentina.

The road system is known in the local Quechua language as Qhapaq Ñan, which means ‘The Great Inca Trail’.

Traveling the Inca Trail from KM 104 is the ideal option to experience Inca engineering on the way to the citadel of Machu Picchu.

It is a walk of medium-high intensity, which begins in the Urubamba River and reaches the citadel of Machu Picchu, passing through beautiful archaeological remains such as Chachabamba, Wiñaywayna, and Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), from where you have an extraordinary view of the citadel of Machu Picchu.

  • Length: 8.8km (5.5 miles)
  • Elevation gain: 1,101 m (3,600 ft)
  • Estimated time: 5 to 7 hours

CUSCO CITY

The city of Cusco was the most important urban center of the Tahuantinsuyo Empire. Founded by the Inca Manco Cápac, and made up of palaces, temples, and courts (houses), with streets and squares, it was surrounded by extensive areas for agriculture and crafts. It reached its greatest development with the Inca Pachacutec in the fifteenth century.

Today, Cusco is a cosmopolitan center, where the past and the present come together gracefully, becoming a melting pot of activities and cultural experiences.
